Classic Men's Watches - Making a Comeback

The main differences between the original classic watches of the early 1900s and today's replicas is that today's watches are more dependable and less expensive. As with the originals, they never need winding. They don't take batteries, either.

Created in 1923 by Swiss watchmaker Ulrich Van-Heusen, this gold toned Steinhausen Classic has a leather wrist band, Roman numerals, and is marked off to the tenth of a second. Inside the dial are 3 smaller dials - one for the date, one for the day of the week, and a beautifully illustrated circle indicating AM or PM. This was one of the first automatic calendar watches, and the first watch to differentiate between AM and PM.

Today's version is an exact replica. But instead of costing thousands of dollars as it did back then - and as contemporary top of the line brands do today - it is considered a mid-range price watch (falling into the $250 USD category).

With the creation of this watch, Van-Heusen founded the now famous Steinhausen brand, named after his father's home land. At the time, few had heard of wrist watches with such displays. Most still used pocket watches.

But men of wealth and power began wearing the Steinhausen Classic - kings, princes, and emperors from around the world. Soon, those who could afford them, bought the Steinhausen watches and left their pocket watches behind.

Van-Heusen's Legacy

One of his next watches was the Steinhausen Baron - which Van-Heusen designed exclusively for an Austrian Baron in 1930. There was a time when most people carried their watches in their pockets rather than on their wrists.

A pocket watch is basically a small clock that a person carries in their pocket. They were often attached to a small chain or watch fob so they couldn't be dropped or stolen. During the late 19th Century most professionals and railroad workers carried them.

They are the oldest kind of watch and were first developed in the 16th Century but only carried by the rich. Most people didn't carry watches until the advent of railroads in the 19th Century which required people to follow schedules.

Pocket watches were associated with the railroads because railroad crew members used them to make sure that they were following the train schedules. Railroads started the practice of giving a gold watch to an employee on his retirement.

They began disappearing in World War I when wristwatches began to get popular. A major reason for the popularity of wristwatches was the appearance of cars. People could easily check wristwatches while driving they couldn't check pocket watches while driving a car.

Since the 1920s there have been attempts to bring the pocket watch back but they haven't been successful. Today, classic American pocket watches like Elgin and Bulova are very popular collectors items.

There are two main kinds, open face and hunter-case watches. An open face watch has a large easy to read open face, this was the kind of watch often carried by railroad men. Many later open faced watches had two or three smaller faces on them to give people more information. A hunter case watch is the watch with a metal cover that snaps shut over the face to protect it. Hunter case watches were often carried by workingmen who needed to protect their watches.

Pocket watches were originally wound with keys but in their heyday most had jeweled movements. Most were wound with a knob on the top of the watch that was turned.

Railroad personnel were required to carry an open-faced pocket watch. Wind-up Versus Electric Pocket Watches

The original pocket watches relied on clockwork mechanisms to keep time. The more expensive modern reproductions of these watches also use clockwork. If a person is more interested than the style rather than true authenticity, he can save some money by selecting a battery operated pocket watch. The battery-operated reproductions can also be bought in open face and hunter-case varieties. Different Pocket Watch Movement Types

Crown-wind, pin-set movement - This style of movement worked similar to the one above, except the user had to press a pin in when he chose to set the time.

In this technological age, many people, especially the younger generation, would not see the need or appreciate the qualities of a chain pocket watch.

Pocket watches are seen as old fashioned. The ability to tell the time comes to people from all sorts of sources. Wristwatches are now the norm and yet even they seem to be dated, as a lot of people in this day and age don't even wear watches any more. They simply use their mobile phones or personal digital assistants to tell the time. Yes, our ability to tell the time is taken for granted now.

That hasn’t always been the case. The history of pocket watches extends back to the 16th century, when craftsmen were first able to create portable clocks small enough to hang around the neck or fit inside a pocket. It was at this time when watches emerged as highly desirable commodities.

Imagine the skill needed to hand-produce things as intricate and complex as pocket watches, without modern tools and factories. A watchman would spend months creating a pocket watch. Watch making back then was one of the most difficult, but most respected professions. This craftsmanship didn’t come cheap, as each piece was very expensive.

To emphasise the work behind every piece, a pocket watch was usually encased in gold, adding even more value to the masterpiece. It goes without saying that only the rich were able to afford a pocket watch.

But why did they create a pocket watch, you might ask? Why the chain? Surely a wristwatch would have been more practical?

It would have been unthinkable for a person of wealth and position to expose their arm to view the time.

That is why the value of a chain pocket watch has endured, and flourished, throughout the years. It still carries with it the elegance of the upper class and there are many who appreciate its rich history and own some beautiful collections.

Time has been a popular concept sense civilization began. Sailors were using the sun and moon to tell the passage of time. On land the sundial was a way of keeping tract. It was a primitive means to marking time but in those days it worked.

Man has never been content to just let things be, so he started thinking about ways to improve on the idea of keeping time. Early In the 1700's research was being done on how to create a timepiece that one could carry around. Up until then means of telling time had consisted of large stationary time pieces. Through the 1700's watches began to be turned out by far thinking individuals but they had to be made by hand and it was a slow process.

By the 1800's man was looking for a yet better way. Eli Terry developed a wonderful machine that could produce clock parts that were all alike. Parts could now be mass produced and even better all the parts could be interchanged from one clock or watch to any other.
Research was being done also on materials to use in the making of the clock or watch. It was truly becoming an interesting idea.

Over the years watches made the transition from pocket to wrist. Pocket watches were clumsy to carry but a hundred years ago that was the choice of men. The pocket watch was the only way for men to keep track to time in their daily business ventures. The watch became a symbol of wealth as well. The better off you were the fancier the watch and the watch fob.
Women were wearing small watches attached to their clothing as broaches or wrist-lets which were considered by most as fads in jewelry. These were not really designed to serve a real purpose. Women, however, were finding that the ability to tell the time was becoming very helpful in planning their days. They wanted better watches too, something more practical and easier to care for.

With the passing of time men began to experiment with easier methods of carrying a watch. They were encased in leather pouches attached to the belt for ease of use and some men had figured out how to attach belt straps to these watches so they could be worn on the wrist. They were crude but it was a beginning of what we now know as a wristwatch.

The small ladies watches were being produced with chain link bracelets. The problem was they were fragile and not very accurate because of their size. In 1906 the expandable and flexible bracelet watch was introduced and the watch began to change. The bracelet watch was convenient but it was still fragile. People wanted the convenience of the wristwatch but they wanted durability as well. Many improvements were made, new ideas tried and finally they began to make progress with a durable, dependable, and nice looking watch.

Over the years discoveries led to replacement of the ceramic watch face with harder materials. Work was done to make the movements stronger and smaller. Technology was working on making watches more able to withstand moisture and shocks of being hit or banged. Quartz, battery powered and atomic clocks were invented. LCD and LED displays made the scene. The invention of smaller works, waterproofing and shock resistance has put the watch on the wrist of just about everyone. Today the watch is a part of everyone's life. We have watches that not only tell you the time but keep track of mileage, times around the world, and much more. We now have solar powered watches. Touch screen watches have also arrived at the market place.
Watches are beautiful jewelry and accurate time keepers. We depend on the watch to keep us on time and oversee our day. Watches have become an important part of everyday life for all of us.

Water clocks, sundials and candle clocks, the earliest time measurement devices, were far from accurate. In the early 13th century the development of weight-driven clocks came about. These devices used gears. All of them had an hour hand, but the minute hand was reserved as a luxury only for the wealthy. These first weight-driven clocks were used for public display on monasteries, church towers and city halls.

By the 16th century, clocks were manufactured using springs in place of weight. These clocks were much more portable and were the first timepieces small enough for the public to own. They were still rather expensive and owned only by the wealthy. People would usually place them on a wall in their house to signify status and authority. Early clocks were driven by hanging weights. Since they depended on gravity to work properly, they had to be firmly mounted on the wall or in a case. But by the 1400s, it had been discovered that a clockwork mechanism could be powered by a coiled spring instead. This led to the development of the first portable clock by Peter Henlein, a German metalworker, in the early 16th century (some sources credit Henlein with inventing spring-powered clocks, but this is disputed). Henlein's "Taschenuhr" was expensive, had only an hour hand, and was inaccurate -- it ran slower as the mainspring unwound -- but it quickly became popular and spawned many imitators.

The next major development in pocket watch technology came in 1657, when the famous Dutch scientist and inventor Christian Huygens designed the balance spring assembly, which made the watch run more accurately and enabled the addition of the minute hand. The first watch made according to Huygens's plans was given as a gift to King Louis XIV of France.

These early watches were worn on neck chains. But men's fashion changed in the 17th and 18th centuries, and the waistcoat became a necessary part of a well-dressed man's wardrobe, and it became more common to carry a watch in the waistcoat pocket instead. Around this time, the use of a crystal to cover the watch face and protect the hands from damage became common.

The Industrial Revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries led to the mass production of pocket watches. This development was also driven by the increasing popularity of railroads. Railroad workers needed accurate timekeepers to do their jobs and avoid accidents, and this meant massive demand for cheap, tough, precise watches. * Modern glass crystals are also available as flat, raised or domed according to what requirements you have. And they are also manufactured to fit almost perfectly. Several sizes are available so there is no need to file the edges of the glass facing to make it fit perfectly. If a more exact fit is required, watchmakers use an epoxy resin or UV resin to get the watch face to fit exactly and provide a water tight fit.
* Hunting case crystals are the only ones which are a little difficult to find as the crystal should be thin and below the watch surface. The hands of the watch should also be clear of the overlying glass. The diameter and thickness of this type of watch face has to be calibrated perfectly or it will interfere with watch functions.
* One common problem nearly every watchmaker will face is about sourcing parts. Swiss watch companies have been around for a long time and they are more than happy to provide spare parts custom made to suit antique watch pieces. But they do not supply genuine case parts to individual dealers to prevent cheating. You might have to send your antique watch piece to the company to get the necessary repairs done. This however takes a lot of time and money.

Before wristwatches became ubiquitous in our society, pocket watches were the standard for personal timekeeping. Bearing a close resemblance to the traditional clock, early pocket watches operated in very much the same manner as their clock cousins.

A deviation from traditional clock designs, pocket watches used the combination of a mainspring, hairspring and a balance wheel. This is in contrast to traditional clock designs that used a swinging pendulum and counter weights.

Like todays wristwatches, pocket watches consist of two main components, the inner works and a metal case. Many different metals were used for early pocket watchcases including gold and silver. The cases of early watches were impervious to dirt and moisture, which meant the watches, needed a good bit regular cleaning. As time went on, other less expensive metals were used for case works including mild steel and pot metal.

The inner works of the early pocket watch contained a number of gears and wheels held in place between two metal plates. The lower plate or pillar plate rests next to the dial while the upper plate might have come in two pieces though the best made watches utilized a single piece upper plate. The plates were precisely drilled and bored to hold the other components in the proper place. There were four wheels in the works known as the barrel wheel, the first wheel, the second wheel and the third wheel. The wheel that has sixty gear teeth around the circumference engages the escapement wheel and transmits motion to the minute hand. It also meshes into the pinion of the center wheel that transmits motion to the hour hand. Movement is controlled by a lever that is connected to the hairspring. The plates of the works were made from plate stock of steel or brass and would go through a series of machining operations that would include being placed on a pantograph machine which would exactly copy dimensions from a master part to the part being machined. After machining, the plates would be polished using several types of abrasive materials like emery. Gemstones like garnet, rubies, sapphires and diamond. Garnets would be cut with diamond points into tiny disks and would then be set in tiny plates of gold.

The intricate process of assembly the works required precisely made screws and other components that would often be plated or heat treated by hand. The small gears were stamped from brass using very precisely made dies and springs were formed from fine spring wire.

Once fully assembled, the finished watch was subjected to cold temperatures of around forty degrees Fahrenheit and then exposed to higher temperatures up to around one hundred degrees Fahrenheit. This process was undoubtedly used to test the watch in different temperature extremes to ensure consistent operation.

Like countless other consumer products, the way in which modern wrist watches are manufactured has undergone incredible changes since the Industrial Revolution that broke during the turn of twentieth century. This important period in world history ushered in entirely new ways to mass produce products for a growing world population. In every facet of manufacturing there were incredible technological advances that improved efficiencies and helped reduce production costs.

Cars would constantly roll off the Ford assembly line, as workers would fit various parts to the chassis in a precise order and within a predetermined time. Critical to the success of the mass production line was the development of standardized parts, components that are nearly identical to each other.

Prior to the development of mass production assembly lines, most mechanical assemblies, including watches were built from components that were made individually most often by different producers. This meant that very often, parts from one machine be it a car, locomotive or sewing machine, could be not be used on another machine.
As other watch producers adopted the practice of parts standardization and integrated quality control, the reliability of wrist watches was greatly increased.
